Norwegian language assessment tests

At the current time, there are four Norwegian language assessment tests in use: Norskprøve 1, 2, 3 and Bergenstest – advanced level.

   Norskprøve 1

Norskprøve 1 is a Norwegian language test based on the language and social studies at level A1. The main purpose of Norskprøve 1 is to give the students and teachers on this level some feedback on the achievements of the students. Norskprøve 1 normally is held at the individual schools and as Norskprøve 1 is not a final test for this language level then there is no official certificate for passing this test.

   Norskprøve 2

Norskprøve 2 is the first official language test and assesses the students based on the A2 level of the CEFR. The students are tested for the ability to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment),  the ability to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. They must also be able to describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

   Norskprøve 3

Norskprøve 3 is an often-used benchmark for those who do not wish or need to take the advanced language test -Bergenstest. Norskprøve 3 testes the students ability to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Students will need to be able to understand texts written in direct and  clearly structured language form.

Norskprøve II and Norskprøve III are final tests for courses on the corresponding levels. Each of the tested are designed to evaluate the students language skills on the corresponding levels as defined in the curriculum. Norskprøve 2 and Norskprøve 3 are both design with a written and an oral section that will test the students language skills as well as the students general knowledge about Norway. The general knowledge is taken from the curriculum of the corresponding level.

Bergenstesten is the most advanced Norwegian language test. This test is used to evaluate individuals that are applying for certain occupation in Norway, such as doctors, teacher and a few others. You may also need the Bergenstest to study universities and colleges in Norway.
